Designed in conjunction with RSPB. The bearded tit – one of the UK’s rarest breeding birds – has continued to bounce back from a population crash. Bearded tits are very sensitive to cold hard winters. Their numbers are increasing due to the work the RSPB are doing to improve and create more habitat for them across their nature reserves. The charity’s hard work will allow bearded tit numbers to continue to grow into a more stable population.

Named after their similarities with long-tailed tits and the dark facial markings on the males that resemble a moustache, bearded tits make their homes on well-managed reed beds. The historic loss of this wetland habitat across the UK has resulted in the population becoming fragmented but thanks to sites such as Leighton Moss, which boasts of having the largest reed bed in the North West of England, the future looks bright for these charming birds.
